Devaki is a central maternal figure of the Krishna story: daughter of Devaka of Mathura's royal line, wife of Vasudeva and mother of Krishna; tradition regards her as a portion of Aditi. In the processed verses the Lord Himself took birth in her womb by His own will: 'devakyam vasudevasya jato yasya cikirshayaya' (SB 1.1.12).
