Gandharvas

गन्धर्व

The Gandharvas are the celestial musicians of Svarga, presiding over music and singing in the assembly of the gods, and are the companions of the Apsarases. In Vedic literature they guard the soma and dwell in the mid-region; the Puranas name Vishvavasu and Chitraratha among their chiefs. At SB 2.1.36, in the description of the Virat-Purusha, the Gandharvas together with the Vidyadharas, Charanas and Apsarases are called His musical memories — so that all the music of the world is shown as the sounding memory of that one Person.
