Khatvanga is a royal sage of the Ikshvaku line who aided the gods in their war with the asuras; when they offered him a boon he asked instead how long he had to live, and was told: a single muhurta. At SB 2.1.13 Shukadeva holds him up before Parikshit as the model — 'muhurtat sarvam utsrijya gatavan abhayam harim', he renounced everything in that moment and took refuge in the fearless Hari. The example is given to prove Parikshit's seven days ample, and establishes the Bhagavata's principle that liberation asks not for length of time but for an awakened moment (SB 2.1.12).
