Sarasvati is the Hindu goddess of learning, speech, music and art — adored in the Vedas as a river-goddess and known as Brahma's consort; her iconic form bears the vina, book and rosary. In the processed verses Suta bows to her at the start of his reply: 'devim sarasvatim vyasam tato jayam udirayet' (SB 1.2.4) — the classic invocation of the Goddess of Word before sounding forth scripture.
