Shibi (Aushinara), king of the Ushinara country, is celebrated in the Puranas and the Mahabharata for charity and for protecting those who seek refuge. Tested by Agni as a dove and Indra as a hawk, he cut flesh from his own body onto the scales to save the bird that had taken shelter with him — a byword for self-sacrifice. At SB 1.12.20 Parikshit is foretold to be 'a giver and a refuge like Shibi son of Ushinara'.
