Takshaka

Takshaka, one of the eight great nagas, offspring of Kadru and Kashyapa and a chief of the naga world, bit Parikshit on the seventh day as the instrument of the curse of the brahmana's son Shringi. At SB 1.12.27 the brahmanas foretell it at the very birth: 'hearing of his own death from Takshaka, sent by a brahmana's son, he will become free of attachment and attain the state of Hari.' That curse is the occasion of the Bhagavata itself, for within those seven days Shuka recited the whole of it to Parikshit. His son Janamejaya later held the snake sacrifice in revenge.
