The Directions are the group presiding over the ears of the cosmic Person. At SB 3.6.17: 'karNAv asya vinirbhinnau dhiShNyaM svaM vivishur dishaH / shrotreNAMshena shabdasya siddhiM yena prapadyate' — when the two ears opened, the directions entered their own place, and by hearing, His portion, the attainment of sound comes about. Here the Bhagavata makes the directions themselves, rather than any single god, the presiding power of hearing.
