Uma

Umā is a name of Pārvatī, daughter of Himālaya, wife of Śiva and mother of Gaṇeśa and Kārttikeya; as Satī she was the daughter of Dakṣa and gave up her body when her husband was insulted at her father's sacrifice, to be born again in the house of the mountain king. In the Kena Upaniṣad it is Umā Haimavatī who imparts the knowledge of Brahman to Indra, establishing her character as a giver of wisdom. At SB 2.3.7 one who seeks conjugal happiness is directed to worship 'Umā the chaste' — the epithet marking her fidelity — while the same verse assigns learning to Giriśa.
