वैतरणी
The Vaitaraṇī is, in the Puranas, the dreadful river on the road to Yama's realm which the sinful must cross; it is described as filled with blood, pus and scalding matter, and is said to be easily crossed by one who has given a cow in charity. The name also belongs to an actual river, but in the Bhagavata it is the emblematic river of the infernal road. At SB 2.2.7 Shukadeva invokes it to produce dispassion — 'pashyan janam patitam vaitaranyam sva-karma-jan paritapan jushanam' — for one who still turns his mind to unreal things after seeing men suffer torments born of their own deeds is no different from a beast.
