Vamana is Vishnu's dwarf-brahmana avatara: begging three paces of land at Bali's sacrifice and, as Trivikrama, spanning the three worlds in those steps. SB 1.3.19: 'pancadasam vamanakam krtva' — the fifteenth avatara, 'begging three paces, intending to take back the threefold heaven'.
