Abhimana

अभिमान

Abhimana, self-identification, is the principle which enters the self of the cosmic Person and causes the apprehension of what is to be done. At SB 3.6.25: 'AtmAnaM chAsya nirbhinnam abhimAno avishat padam / karmeNAMshena yenAsau kartavyaM pratipadyate'. It is treated as distinct from ahamkara, because the Bhagavata gives the two separate stations: ahamkara arises from the mahat principle (SB 3.5.29-30), while abhimana here presides over the self of the Virat and, through the portion of action, brings about the sense of what must be done.
