Gajendra

Gajendra is the lord of the elephant herd whose story is famous in the eighth Skandha as the Gajendra-mokṣa. While drinking in a lake his foot was seized by a crocodile, and after a struggle of a thousand years, his strength failing, he took a lotus in his trunk and praised the primal Person; the Lord came mounted on Garuḍa and delivered him, killing the crocodile with His disc. SB 2.7.15-16 gives the story in two verses, and verse 15 quotes the words of Gajendra's cry — 'You whose fame is a holy place, whose very name is auspicious to hear' — held to be the model utterance of one taking refuge.
