Indra

इन्द्र

Indra is the king of the Vedic gods, wielder of the thunderbolt, slayer of Vritra and lord of Svarga; more hymns of the Rigveda are addressed to him than to any other deity. In the Puranas his position is an office filled by different beings in different world-ages, and he commonly appears as one who assists in, or is chastened by, the Lord's acts. At SB 2.1.29, in the description of the Virat-Purusha, Indra and the gods are named as His arms — 'indradayo bahava ahur usrah' — so that the whole strength of the gods is shown to be the power of a single limb of that one Person.
