Kamsa, the tyrant king of Mathura, was the son of Ugrasena and brother of Devaki. Warned by a voice from the sky that Devaki's eighth child would kill him, he imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and destroyed their children. He was at last slain by Krishna. At SB 1.8.23 Kunti recalls him — 'khalena devaki kamsena ruddhaticiram shucarpita' — and likens her own deliverance to Devaki's release.
