Manas

मन

Also known as मनः

Manas, mind, is the principle produced from the vaikarika division of ahamkara in the Sankhya sequence. At SB 3.5.30 Maitreya gives the aham principle as threefold — vaikarika, taijasa and tamasa — and says: 'ahan-tattvAd vikurvANAn mano vaikArikAd abhUt', from the aham principle as it transformed, from the vaikarika, mind arose. In the same verse he calls the gods vaikarika too, 'arthAbhivya~njanaM yataH', because from them comes the manifestation of objects. SB 3.5.31 goes on: from the taijasa came the senses of knowledge and action, from the tamasa the subtle origin of the elements, from which space appeared. Manas thus stands between the senses and the elements.
