Mandavya

माण्डव्य

Mandavya is the sage by whose curse the birth of Yama is accounted. At SB 3.5.20 Maitreya tells Vidura: 'mANDavya-shApAd bhagavAn prajA-saMyamano yamaH / bhrAtuH kShetre bhujShyAyAM jAtaH satyavati-sutAt' — the Lord Yama, who restrains beings, was born by the curse of Mandavya, in the field of his brother, of a bondwoman, from the son of Satyavati. This is the only mention of Mandavya in the third Skandha; the Bhagavata does not retell the story of the curse here, only names its effect as the cause of the birth.
