सूर्य

Surya is the sun god. At SB 3.8.31 Brahma meditates on Hari, who is 'sUryendu-vAyv-agnigamaM tridhAmabhiH parikramat-prAdhanikair durAsadam' — unapproachable by sun, moon, wind and fire, of threefold dwelling, hard to reach as He is circled by the moving sacrificial posts. The sun is named here beside the moon, the wind and fire, as the measure of how far the Lord's dwelling is beyond reach. At SB 3.8.14 the sun is taken as a simile, where the lotus-cup lights the vast water with its own radiance 'arka iva', as the sun does. The roster held no sun entity before this.
