Uttara is the daughter of Virata king of the Matsyas, wife of Abhimanyu and mother of Parikshit. At SB 1.8.8-10, terrified by Ashvatthama's brahmastra, she runs to Krishna for refuge and asks that her embryo be spared even at the cost of her own life — 'let it burn me, but let not my embryo be destroyed'. The Lord covered that womb with His own maya and so preserved the Kuru succession (SB 1.8.14).
