Varaha is Vishnu's boar avatara (second in the Bhagavata's list here): assuming the sukara form He raised the earth sunk in rasatala; puranic tradition also joins the slaying of Hiranyaksha to Him (not part of the processed verses). SB 1.3.7: taking 'saukaram vapuh' as 'yajnesha', He lifted the earth for her welfare.
