Vasudeva is the father of Krishna: a respected prince of the Yadu line (Shurasena's family), husband of Devaki; Krishna's patronymic 'Vasudeva' derives from his name (the personal name and Krishna's epithet are kept as separate entities). In the processed verses Krishna was begotten by him and born of Devaki by His own will: 'devakyam vasudevasya jato yasya cikirshayaya' (SB 1.1.12).
