Gandhari, daughter of Subala king of Gandhara, is the wife of Dhritarashtra and mother of the hundred Kauravas. In sympathy with her husband's blindness she bound her own eyes for life — a celebrated example of wifely devotion. At SB 1.8.3 she is described as 'putra-shokarta', stricken with grief for her sons, and is among those Krishna consoles.
