Subala
सुबल
Subala, king of the Gandhara country, was the father of Gandhari and Shakuni. At SB 1.13.30 Gandhari is called 'the daughter of Subala' as she follows her husband towards the Himalaya, and at SB 1.13.31 she is named 'Saubali' after him. His daughter's marriage to Dhritarashtra and his son Shakuni's part in the Kuru assembly lie at the root of the Mahabharata narrative.

Subala is the father of Shakuni. Source evidence (SB 3.1.14): Shakuni is the son of Subala: SB 3.1.14 lists those present at the insult to Vidura as 'sakarNAnujasaubalena' — with Karna, the younger brother and the Saubala, i.e. the son of Subala.
